Human Stories
At 62, I share my husband of forty years with another woman because without his
A woman begins confronting the reality of her long marriage after her husband starts splitting his time with another woman. She reaches out for support, attends a group meeting, and starts imagining a future where she can reclaim her independence.
David’s car was barely out of the driveway when I found myself staring at the business card. The woman from the dinner had handed it to me with a knowing look, as if she understood the turmoil brewing beneath my composed exterior. It felt like a lifeline, but it also terrified me. What if she was right? What if there was a way out that I had been too scared to see?
The next few days passed in a blur. David returned late Sunday night as promised, slipping into bed beside me, smelling faintly of a perfume I didn’t wear. I lay awake, the card burning a hole in my nightstand drawer. By morning, I had made up my mind. I needed to know what options I actually had, even if I wasn’t ready to act on them yet.
On Monday, after David left for work, I called the number. A warm voice answered, introducing herself as Lisa. She was kind, patient, and most importantly, she listened. I poured out my story, the words spilling over like a dam that had finally broken. Lisa explained that she worked with a women’s support group, helping women in situations like mine to navigate their options. She reassured me that I wasn’t alone and that there were people ready to help, whenever I was ready to take that step.
I hung up feeling lighter, knowing that I wasn’t as isolated as I’d felt. But reality snapped back quickly. I still needed David’s insurance. I still had no savings of my own. The path forward was not as straightforward as I would like it to be.
I decided to start small. Lisa suggested attending a weekly support group to meet others who had faced similar crossroads. The idea of sharing my story terrified me, but the thought of staying silent felt suffocating. That Wednesday, I found myself in a small room with a circle of chairs and faces filled with empathy. For the first time, I heard stories that mirrored mine, stories of women who had felt trapped by love, duty, or necessity.

It was both heartbreaking and empowering. Each story ended with a glimmer of hope, a reminder that there could be light at the end of the tunnel. I left the meeting with a sense of camaraderie and a flicker of hope I hadn’t felt in years.
Back at home, everyday life continued. David came and went, splitting his time as he had declared he would. But something shifted inside me. I was no longer just enduring. I was observing, learning, and slowly building a mental map of what my future could look like.
I began to think about the possibilities. Could I find a part-time job? Maybe take a class to refresh my skills? Every little idea felt like a step toward reclaiming a piece of myself I had long surrendered.
Then one evening, as I was preparing dinner, David walked in with an air of nonchalance, announcing that he would be spending an extended weekend with Paige. The news didn’t sting as severely as before. Instead, I felt a strange sense of relief. I realized that I was beginning to see his absences as opportunities rather than betrayals. Opportunities to explore my own life without his shadow looming over me.
I know I am far from ready to make any drastic changes. My circumstances haven’t altered overnight. But now there’s a seed of possibility planted in my mind, a belief that one day, I might find the courage and the means to choose a different path.
