On Christmas morning, the narrator discovers that seventeen relatives have been living in her snow-covered house, and she finally stands up to them by serving an eviction notice. The story ends with her reclaiming peace in her home and teasing that more of the story will follow.

Connor opened the folder and found the first page, and then his eyes widened as he realized what he was holding. It was a notice of eviction, effective in 30 days. The document was clear and concise, outlining the conditions under which they had been allowed to stay and the reasons for their removal.

For a moment, the kitchen was silent. Megan’s anger transformed into disbelief, her mouth opening and closing without sound. Connor’s face was a mix of shock and confusion.

“You can’t do this,” Megan finally sputtered, her voice rising. “We’re family!”

I shook my head, feeling a mix of sadness and resolve. “Family doesn’t treat each other like you have treated me. I’ve been more than generous, but it’s time for you to stand on your own.”

Connor looked at me, his eyes pleading. “Mom, please. We have nowhere else to go.”

“You have 30 days to find somewhere,” I said calmly. “I suggest you start looking.”

Megan’s eyes filled with tears, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t let myself be swayed by emotions. For too long, I had been the one compromising, bending over backward to make them comfortable while they took everything for granted.

Connor dropped his head, and I could see him wrestling with pride and desperation. He knew that I wasn’t bluffing, and the reality of their situation was sinking in.

As they stood there, grappling with what had just happened, I felt a sense of freedom I hadn’t known in years. I had taken back control of my life and my home. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.

I turned away, picking up my book from the counter, and walked toward the living room. “I think you both should start packing,” I said over my shoulder.

As I settled into my favorite chair, I heard Megan whisper harshly to Connor, and then their voices faded as they moved upstairs, perhaps to start the difficult process of figuring out their next steps.

I opened my book, but before diving into its pages, I allowed myself a moment to savor the newfound peace in my home. It was quiet, with no demands being shouted from across rooms or footsteps thundering above.

For the first time in a long time, I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be, doing exactly what I needed to do for myself.

And though the path ahead was uncertain, I knew I was ready to face whatever came next. I had finally drawn a line, one that should have been drawn long ago.

I glanced out the window, watching the snow fall gently, covering everything in a blanket of white. It felt like a fresh start, a new beginning.

And as I sat there, I realized that there was more of this story to tell. There was still so much left to unfold, so many new chapters to write.
