When I arrived at our lake house for the Fourth of July, my daughter-in-law stopped

At the lake house, Raymond confronts Bianca and Marcus after discovering his house was allegedly sold without his permission. The tense exchange leaves unresolved questions about Marcus’s role and Bianca’s motives, setting up the next part of the story.

Part 2:

The moment Bianca realized the key didn’t work, her face turned from surprise to frustration. She knocked on the door, a sound that echoed through the empty house. I watched from the porch, hidden behind the curtains, as she spoke to Marcus and the two men with her. It was clear, even from a distance, that she was trying to stay composed.

“Raymond, we need to talk,” she called out, her voice carrying a note of desperation I hadn’t heard before. The two men exchanged glances, clearly confused about why they were standing on a porch with no access to the house.

Marcus stepped forward, looking uneasy. “Dad, open the door. We just want to sort things out.” His voice was quieter than hers, but it lacked conviction.

I opened the door but didn’t step outside. “Sort things out?” I said, keeping my tone calm. “Marcus, I think there’s been enough sorting—sorting me out of my own home.”

Bianca took a step forward, adjusting her expression to something resembling concern. “Raymond, we don’t want any trouble. Let’s just discuss this like adults.”

I shook my head. “Trouble’s not what I want either. But selling my house without my permission? That’s not something we discuss lightly.”

Marcus looked down again, unable to meet my eyes. “Dad, we thought it was for the best. We can find you a place where you’ll be comfortable, where people can take care of you.”

My heart ached at his words. “Comfortable?” I asked. “This place was my comfort, Marcus. You should know that better than anyone.”

I could see the conflict in his eyes. Bianca looked at him, urging him to say something more, but he remained silent.

One of the men in the pressed shirts cleared his throat. “Mr. Callaway, we’re here on behalf of the interested buyers. There’s been some confusion about the sale.”

“Confusion?” I repeated. “My confusion is about how my signature ended up on papers I never signed.”

The man shifted his feet, uncomfortable. “We need to resolve this legally.”

“That’s what my lawyer is for,” I replied, holding my ground. “Until then, there’s nothing more to discuss.”

Bianca’s composure slipped for a moment, a flash of anger crossing her face before she regained control. “Raymond, you’re making this difficult for everyone.”

“Difficult?” I asked. “Or just inconvenient?”

She had no answer to that, and an awkward silence settled over the porch. Finally, she turned to Marcus with a look that said she had expected more from him.

As they walked back to their car, I felt both relief and sadness. The lake house stood silent, a testament to years of memories and the love that had once filled it. I knew this fight wasn’t over, but for now, I was the one standing on its porch.

Watching them drive away, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this battle was just beginning. The truth had started to unravel, but so many questions remained.

Why had Marcus gone along with Bianca’s plan? Was he truly concerned for me, or was there something more? And what had driven Bianca to orchestrate such a betrayal?

I needed answers, and I intended to find them. My thoughts turned to the documents, the signatures, and the mysterious buyer who was waiting in the wings.
