Human Stories
My husband slammed my eight-month-pregnant belly into a checkout counter over a $14 baby blanket.
After a violent confrontation in a store, the narrator is comforted by Wyatt while the husband David panics and flees. The article ends by suggesting the story will continue in a part 3.
Wyatt’s deep voice brought me back to the present moment. He gently helped me to my feet, his large hand surprisingly gentle as he steadied me. I nodded, reassuring him, though the sharp ache in my belly worried me. The baby…was the baby okay? My mind raced with fear.
“I think so,” I whispered, my voice shaky. Wyatt nodded, his eyes filled with genuine concern. Around us, the crowd started to shift, whispering amongst themselves, unsure whether to intervene or remain silent spectators to the chaos that had unfolded before them.
David, meanwhile, was struggling to regain his composure. He stumbled to his feet, glaring at Wyatt and me with a mixture of anger and humiliation. His phone was still in his hand, and he was frantically typing a message. Whatever secrets he held, whatever fear had gripped him, it was clear that something far beyond a simple argument over a baby blanket was at play.
Wyatt remained by my side, a steadfast guardian, ensuring I wasn’t left alone. “Do you want me to call the police?” he asked softly, shielding me from David’s hostile gaze. I hesitated, the thought of involving the authorities both daunting and necessary. But before I could answer, David spoke up, his voice strained but filled with feigned authority.
“There’s no need for that,” he barked, trying to regain control of the situation. “This is just a misunderstanding.” His eyes pleaded with the onlookers, begging them to buy his story. But the crowd’s murmurs grew louder, doubt and disbelief etched into their expressions.

Wyatt glanced at me, waiting for my decision. But before I could respond, a woman stepped forward from the crowd. Her face was determined, her eyes locked onto David with a piercing intensity. “I saw what happened,” she declared, her voice cutting through the murmurs. “You can’t treat her like that and just walk away.”
David’s facade cracked, his confidence wavering as more people began to voice their support. The truth was coming to light, and the secrets that David had desperately tried to keep hidden were on the verge of being exposed.
With a look of desperation, David spun around and bolted for the exit, leaving his phone behind in his panic. The crowd parted, allowing him to pass, but their eyes followed him, judgment looming in the air. I watched him go, a mixture of relief and fear washing over me.
Wyatt’s reassuring presence grounded me once more. “Let’s get you checked out,” he suggested gently, guiding me towards a quieter area of the store. “We should make sure everything’s alright.”
I nodded, grateful for his kindness. As we walked away from the chaos, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. David’s secrets were unraveling, and I knew that there was much more to uncover.
For now, though, I needed to focus on the present. The baby and I needed to be alright. But as I glanced back at the remnants of the scene, I knew deep down that the story was far from over. There would be a part 3, and if you want to read more, leave a comment below the Facebook post.
