“Walk home,” my mother-in-law said. “Maybe poverty will welcome you back.” Everyone in the van
The narrator returns to Lotus Bay Resort and regains her composure, focusing on her role, her plans for the resort, and the upcoming investors’ dinner. The evening ends successfully, while tensions with the Mercers and Daniel remain unresolved, setting up the next part of the story.
I followed the guard through the grand entrance of Lotus Bay Resort, feeling the cool breeze from the sea wash over me. The tension of the morning began to lift with each step, replaced by a quiet determination. The staff greeted me with polite nods, unaware of the drama that had unfolded outside their tranquil paradise.
Inside my office, I took a deep breath and let the familiar surroundings ground me. The walls were adorned with photographs of the resort’s journey from a struggling venture to a prestigious haven for luxury travelers. I remembered the sleepless nights and endless meetings it took to transform Lotus Bay into what it was today. It was my sanctuary and a testament to what I had achieved on my own terms.
I sat at my desk, smoothing out the wrinkles in my dress, and thought about the Mercers. Vivian’s words still echoed in my mind, but they no longer stung. Instead, they fueled a steady resolve. I would not let their disdain define me or my worth. I was more than the labels they tried to stick on me.
As I settled in, my assistant, Lena, knocked on the door and entered with a warm smile. “Ms. Arden, everything is ready for the investors’ dinner. Is there anything else you need?”
“Thank you, Lena.” I glanced at my phone, considering my next move. “Actually, could you please make sure the Mercers have a delightful stay? Upgrade them to the best suite and ensure they have everything they need.”
Lena looked surprised but nodded. “Of course, Ms. Arden. I’ll take care of it.”

After she left, I turned my focus back to the messages I had received. Daniel’s words lingered, a reminder of the distance that had grown between us. I knew I had to confront him about his silence and his family’s treatment of me. But that would come later.
For now, I prepared for the evening ahead. The investors’ dinner was crucial, not just for the resort, but for my vision of what it could become. I wanted to expand Lotus Bay, to introduce new eco-friendly initiatives and support local communities. These were plans I had nurtured quietly, waiting for the right moment to bring them to life.
The sun began to set, painting the sky with shades of pink and gold. Downstairs, the guests were starting to gather, laughter and music drifting up to my office. I checked my reflection in the mirror, adjusting my now-dry dress. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a reminder of my strength and resilience.
As I headed to the boardroom, I felt the weight of the day lift off my shoulders. I was ready to face the challenges ahead, both personal and professional. Vivian and her family might see me as an outsider, but I knew where I belonged. I was proud of how far I had come, and nothing could take that away from me.
And so, the evening unfolded with grace and elegance. The dinner was a success, the investors impressed with my plans for the resort’s future. As I mingled with the guests, I caught glimpses of the Mercers, their expressions softened by the luxury of their surroundings. For a moment, I felt a pang of pity for them. They were trapped in their own world, unable to see beyond their narrow views.
With the night drawing to a close, I knew that there was more to come. My journey was far from over, and I was ready for whatever lay ahead.
