“My husband had just left for a business trip when my six-year-old daughter whispered, ‘Mommy…
A woman is startled when her husband’s colleague Sarah arrives urgently, warning that Derek’s dangerous secret dealings have put the family in danger. Sarah helps them flee to a supposedly safe location, ending with a teaser that the story continues in Part 3.
I froze as the voice on the other side of the door lingered in the air. It wasn’t a voice I recognized immediately. My heart raced, pounding in my chest like a runaway train. My first instinct was to shield Lily, to pull her behind me and away from the door.
“Who is it?” I called out, trying to sound braver than I felt.
The voice was soft but urgent. “It’s me, Sarah. Please, you have to trust me.”
Sarah. The name clicked in my memory like a puzzle piece finding its place. Sarah was Derek’s colleague, someone I had met only twice at awkward office parties. She hadn’t seemed particularly fond of Derek, but then again, who really was?
“Sarah?” I asked, hesitation coloring my voice as I peered through the peephole.
There she was, looking around nervously, as if she was afraid of being caught. Her face was pale, her hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she wore a coat that seemed too big for her slight frame.
“Please, let me in. There’s no time to explain,” she urged, glancing over her shoulder. “Derek sent me a message. He told me to get you out of here.”
Lily squeezed my hand, and I knew I had to make a decision fast. Trust was a luxury I didn’t have time to deliberate. I unlocked the door and pulled it open. Sarah slipped inside, closing it quickly behind her.
“Why are you helping us?” I asked, keeping my voice low.
Sarah took a deep breath. “Because Derek is in over his head. I don’t know all the details, but I know enough to realize you and Lily are in danger. He thought he could control everything, but it’s spiraling out of control.”
“What’s going on?” I demanded, desperation and fear mixing in my voice.

She shook her head. “There are people after him, and they don’t care about collateral damage. He’s been involved in some shady deals, things I’m not even supposed to know about. But when he messaged me last night, I knew it was bad.”
“Why didn’t he come himself?” I asked, anger flaring up.
“He couldn’t. He thinks he’s being watched. That’s why he’s ‘gone.’” Sarah used air quotes, her expression grim. “He didn’t want to drag you down with him.”
I wanted to shout, to demand why he hadn’t just been honest from the start. But now wasn’t the time for blame. We had to move.
“Where do we go?” I asked.
Sarah handed me an address scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper. “A friend of mine. You’ll be safe there. It’s off the grid, and no one will think to look for you there.”
Lily clung to my side, and I could feel her trembling. I kneeled down to her level. “Honey, we’re going to be okay. You trust me, right?”
She nodded, her eyes wide but trusting.
We hurried to the car, Sarah keeping watch as we loaded into the vehicle. As I drove away, I glanced in the rear-view mirror. Sarah stood on the porch, watching us leave, her expression unreadable.
As the distance between us and the house grew, I felt a mix of fear and relief. I didn’t know what the future held, but I knew we had taken the first step towards safety.
