Human Stories

I was hired to visit a blind, isolated veteran every Sunday and act as though

A young woman discovers that the blind veteran she visited every Sunday left her money in his will, along with a heartfelt note calling her his granddaughter. The gift gives her hope for her family and inspires her to learn more about Walter’s life.

I sat in the lawyer’s office, feeling a mix of curiosity and anxiety. Walter’s family members glanced at me with a mixture of confusion and suspicion. I had no idea what his final instruction could be or why it involved me.

The lawyer cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses. “Walter Harrison was a man who cared deeply about those around him,” he began. “In his final weeks, he made a decision that he felt was important regarding you.”

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. What could Walter possibly have left for me? I wasn’t really his granddaughter; I was just an impostor in their eyes.

The lawyer continued, “Walter was aware of your situation, the struggles your family faced, and the sacrifices you made to spend time with him. He appreciated your company more than you realized.”

Tears welled up in my eyes. I remembered all those Sundays, the stories, and the laughter we shared. It was hard to believe he knew about my life.

“To show his gratitude,” the lawyer said, “Walter decided to include you in his will. He left you a sum of money that he hoped would help you and your family.”

Walter’s relatives gasped in disbelief. I was shocked and overwhelmed. Walter, the man I had grown to love like family, had thought of me even in his final moments. I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer.

The lawyer handed me an envelope. “This is from Walter. He left it for you.”

With trembling hands, I opened it and found a handwritten note.

“My dear,” it read, “you have been the light in my life when I needed it most. Use this gift to chase your dreams and take care of your family. Thank you for being my granddaughter, even if it was just pretend. Love, Grandpa.”

I clutched the note to my heart, feeling a warmth I hadn’t known since his passing. Walter’s gift was more than just money; it was a reminder of the bond we had shared.

Walter’s family slowly began to leave, some still in shock, others whispering amongst themselves. But I didn’t care. I had something more valuable than their approval—I had Walter’s love and trust.

As I left the lawyer’s office, I couldn’t help but think about how much had changed since that first Sunday. The job I had taken out of desperation had given me so much more than financial relief. It had given me a friend, a mentor, and a family.

Now, with Walter’s gift, I could help my mother with Noah’s medical bills and focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial burdens. I felt a sense of hope and determination I hadn’t felt in years.

Yet, as grateful as I was for his generosity, I knew this story wasn’t over. There were still unanswered questions and more of his life to uncover. I needed to learn more about the man who had left such an impact on me.

This is just the beginning of my journey, and I plan to honor Walter’s memory by living a life he’d be proud of. To find out what happens next, stay tuned for Part 3. If you’re curious to know more, leave a comment below the Facebook post.
