A Time to Face the Music
Rodrigo returns home from a luxurious getaway and must confront the consequences of his actions after Elena’s surgery. He visits her in the hospital, where she expresses her pain and exhaustion from lies, leaving their future uncertain.
As the plane descended back home, reality started to settle in, little by little. The luxury of the past few days seemed like a distant echo, fading into the background of a life that felt like it belonged to someone else. I imagined the welcoming arms of security in my lavish suite, but now I was about to face a different kind of reality—a confrontation with my choices.
The airport was bustling, and the noise mirrored the chaos in my mind. I switched on my phone, the real one, and messages flooded in. Most were from Mauricio, each one more urgent than the last. My heart pounded. I knew I had to call him, but I hesitated. I was terrified of hearing the consequences of my actions.
Finally, I dialed his number. It rang several times before he picked up.
“Rodrigo,” Mauricio said, his voice cold, like distant thunder.
“How’s Elena?” I asked, trying to sound composed.
“She’s out of surgery,” he replied. “But it was touch and go for a while. She’s asking for you.”
A wave of guilt washed over me, heavier than the ocean. Mauricio’s tone pierced deeper than any words of anger could have.
“I’m on my way to the hospital,” I said quickly, hoping to salvage some dignity. “Tell her… tell her I’m coming.”
The drive to the hospital was a blur, a mix of blurred streets and honking horns. My mind raced, scripting apologies, but none of them felt right. When I arrived, the smell of antiseptic and the quiet shuffle of nurses added to my anxiety.
I found Mauricio in the waiting room. He looked up from his phone, his eyes devoid of the warmth they once held for me.
“Do you want to explain yourself?” he asked, his voice steady but filled with disappointment.
I took a deep breath, knowing there was no easy way to do this. “I made a mistake, Mau. I was stupid and selfish, and I let everyone down.”
“Stupid doesn’t even begin to cover it,” Mauricio retorted, his words cutting through me.

“I’m sorry,” I said, and I truly meant it. But I knew that words were only the beginning.
He shook his head, staring out the window. “Elena deserved better, Rodrigo. She still does.”
The truth of his words was like a physical blow. I nodded, unable to argue. “Can I see her?”
Mauricio sighed and nodded. “She’s in room 312. But I’m warning you, she’s fragile right now. Be careful.”
As I walked down the sterile hallways, each step felt like it carried a lifetime of regret. When I reached her room, I paused at the door. Elena lay there, pale and frail, her eyes closed. The sight of her, so vulnerable, nearly broke me.
I moved quietly to her side, taking her hand gently. Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at me with a mix of emotions—hurt, confusion, and a flicker of the love we once shared.
“Rodrigo,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“Elena, I’m so sorry,” I began, my voice cracking. “I was a fool. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but I promise I’ll make things right.”
She studied me for a moment, her gaze probing and deep. “I’m tired, Rodrigo. Tired of lies.”
The weight of her words hung in the air, and I realized that rebuilding trust would be the hardest task of my life.
But I was determined to try.
As the day wore on, I stayed by her side, thinking of the path ahead. A path that meant facing my actions and striving to become a better man.
